Renowned for its beaches and mild climate, the Hérault department is also brimming with unique places. Perfect for spicing up your stay at the 4-star campsite in Vias, these atypical spots are sure to satisfy your curiosity.
The Pyramids of La Grande-Motte
Visible from afar, they pique our curiosity. The pyramid-shaped buildings of La Grande-Motte, designed by architect Jean Balladur, have made the seaside resort famous. This bold architecture was recognized in 2010 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication with the “20th Century Heritage” label. With 70% green spaces, 25 km of pedestrian paths, and 7 km of green trails, the city is also a delightful place to stroll.
Life-Sized Rag Dolls
This summer, while wandering the streets of the village of Murviel-les-Béziers, 30 minutes from Vias, you might encounter some peculiar rag dolls: the petetas. Scattered through the medieval alleys, they depict iconic village characters or traditional trades. These little figures are part of the local heritage and bring a festive atmosphere to the community. So don’t be surprised to meet a butcher, the mayor, or the village schoolteacher between July 14th and August 15th.
The Modest Furniture
Near Béziers, in Bassan, there is a place both surprising and poetic, born from the imagination of Alain Fornells: the modest furniture. He has created furniture from recycled materials, giving them unique shapes, sounds, and appearances. Visitors are invited to explore his creations, as he narrates the story of each piece, bringing them to life. For information and appointments, call: +33 4 67 36 11 91.
The Fonséranes Locks
Always in search of surprising places, the Fonséranes Locks in Béziers are a must-see engineering masterpiece on the Canal du Midi. Located near Saint-Nazaire Cathedral, they welcome around 320,000 visitors annually and are the third most visited site in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. This recognition is well-deserved, as this work of art is a true technical feat. It features a 21.50-meter elevation over 312 meters in length, with six basins and seven gates. Unique excursions abound in Hérault, as this department is diverse and full of surprises. We leave it to you to discover the others during your stay at Camping l'Occitan!
