History of the Reserve
The surprising African Reserve of Sigean is situated south of Narbonne, less than an hour from Camping l’Occitan. This wildlife park was established with the goal of preserving Africa’s remarkable flora and fauna, as well as that of France. With this noble vision, Paul de La Panouse and Daniel de Monfreid created a semi-natural zoo in 1972, surrounded by ponds and rivers. This 300-hectare site is home to 900 mammals, 600 reptiles, and 2,000 birds.
Thriving in the semi-wild environment of the reserve, these 3,500 species are perfectly safeguarded from external threats. In addition to protecting native animals, the splendid African Reserve of Sigean has contributed to educating future generations since its opening to the public in 1974. Today, it promotes tourism by providing various facilities for visitors, including restaurants, picnic areas, and shops.
The Iconic Animals of the Reserve
Are you planning a family vacation in Aube? Organize a visit to the African Reserve of Sigean so your children can observe the zoo’s iconic animals.
The Lions of the African Savanna
How about marveling at the natural spectacle of Sigean’s African Reserve for a day? And what could be better than admiring the king of animals? Typically, lions live in the African savannas. However, the park has carefully designed a special habitat to welcome these majestic big cats. Lions play a key role in maintaining the ecosystem by hunting herbivores, preventing them from overgrazing.
Elephants: Gentle and Majestic Giants
Elephants are among children’s favorite animals. These gentle giants live in groups. Did you know? Elephant herds are led by an adult female known as the matriarch. As for their diet, they are large herbivores.
In the past, elephants could be seen in the African Reserve of Sigean. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. However, the park plans to bring them back soon to protect them from various threats such as poaching, habitat loss, and elephant trafficking.
Gazelles, Antelopes, and Other Herbivores
The African Reserve of Sigean is home to thousands of herbivores, including antelopes, zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, and buffalos. They graze on grasses and leaves, reducing plant biomass. These animals also serve as prey for lions and leopards. Enjoy your visit to the park and get a closer look at these extraordinary creatures.
The Experiences Offered
The Sigean African Reserve hosts 8 parks: the African bush (3 parks), the African savanna (3 parks), the bear park, and the lion park. The visit is divided into two parts:
Safari by Car
How about going on a car safari through the heart of the Sigean African Reserve? Enjoy a 7.5 km route to explore a remarkable natural environment. Ponds, marshes, hills, and lush greenery will create a spectacular backdrop! A little tip: make sure to grab the zoo map.
Walking Zones
After the car safari, it’s time for a walk (2.5–4 hours)! Park your car in the parking lot at the center of the Sigean wildlife park and set out to discover it on foot. This allows you to get a closer look at the daily lives of the animals, from lions to giraffes. A little tip: consider hiring a guide.
The Conservation Mission of the Reserve
As you can see, the Sigean Reserve is dedicated to the conservation of African wildlife. To achieve this mission, it participates in species preservation projects, such as breeding programs for endangered animals. The park also collaborates with organizations like ARAS, an association that promotes environmental protection activities, especially within the zoo.
