Béziers, a must-see destination in the Hérault

Béziers, often referred to as the “city of nine locks”, is a delight for history and culture buffs. The city can indeed boast many gems that make up its rich architectural heritage. Among the works that should not be missed is the Gothic cathedral, whose silhouette can be seen from afar. Most of the city’s monuments are concentrated in Vieux Béziers, a historical centre protected for centuries by high ramparts.

Culture, férias and wines are also the pride of this great city of the Hérault. The same is true for many major sites located not far from the beaches, including 19th century mansions, medieval alleys, the Pont-Vieux, arenas from the end of the 19th century; in addition to this, there are the Baltard halls, the remains of a theatre dating back to Roman times or a canal bridge…

Also to be discovered are the famous nine locks of Fonseranes, which are now part of the Unesco world heritage. They are one of the most visited sites in the Languedoc, along with the Pont du Gard and the medieval city of Carcassonne.

Places not to be missed in Béziers

Whether you are passing through Béziers for half a day, a day or more, you will have plenty of time to visit several important places, some of which are widely known beyond the border of the Hérault.

  • The historic centre of Béziers is the place not to be missed when visiting the city. By strolling the shopping streets of the old quarter, you will have the chance to discover the many gems that make up the rich architectural heritage of the city, including the cathedral and the bishops’ garden;
  • Take the time to discover and appreciate the Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse cathedral. As you climb to the top of the central bell tower, you will enjoy a fascinatingly beautiful view of the town but also of the Orb and the Canal du Midi.
  • Many holidaymakers also take the time to take a break and take the opportunity to admire the boats travelling through the nine locks of Fonseranes, or by walking along the canal;
  • The “plateau des poètes” is also worth a visit. Green lung of Béziers, this garden of 5 hectares dating from the 19th century, located between the municipal theatre and the station, is a space for relaxation and walking particularly popular with residents and visitors alike;
  • The flower market on the Allées Paul-Riquet is also a must-see in Béziers. Located opposite the city’s theatre, it welcomes the public in a warm atmosphere every Friday;
  • The cimetière vieux, so often compared to the Parisian Père-Lachaise cemetery and known for its mausoleums and cypress-lined alleys, is also one of the city’s walking spots. If people like to spend time there, it is because the site is quiet and offers an exceptional view of the mountains and the statue of Notre-Dame-du-Moucadou.
  • If you’re visiting Béziers in August, you’ll have the chance to take part in the city’s féria. Bodegas, casitas, shows and flamenco are notably part of the events that punctuate this event that resonates every year throughout the Hérault department;
  • Open every Wednesday morning in July-August, the arenes retrace the history of the city, especially its Roman roots…
